Cannot start Nagios

I cannot start Nagios. When I run the command I receive this error:
CONFIG ERROR! Start aborted. Check your Nagios configuration.

I have looked over the nagios configuration file and do not see anything wrong with it. Also when I run the status command I receive this error:
No lock file found in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.lock

Are these two things related? Thank you for any help you can give me.

No lock file found in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.lock
Of course no lock file found, nagios is not running.
So, do as it stated “Check your Nagios configuration”.
So what do you get when you do that? Or don’t you know how to check your nagios configuration?
