Cannot Start V 3.0rc3

I have upgraded to Nagios V 3.0rc3 and the install has gone well and the web interface is running, but when I sty to start nagios either at the command line or as a service, I get:

“Starting nagios:CONGIF ERROR! Start aborted. Check your Nagios Configuration”

I get the all clear when I run nagios -v nagios.cfg

Any ideas about this one?

please check whether lock file nagios.lock is available or not

After much playing around, I’ve found that I can make it run if I make the following setting on nagios,cfg

check_external_commands=0

Why would this be the case?

I cannot find the file nagios.lock anywhere. I can get nagios to run by running it manually but it will not run as a service.
