Nagios http and smtp services CRITICAL

#1

Hello,
We have Nagios v2.9 and its currently reporting CRITICAL status on both http and smtp services from one of our Windows 2000 Servers SP4. Here is what’s in the win_hosts.cfg file for this particular server:

define service {
host_name johan
service_description SMTP
check_command check_smtp
max_check_attempts 3
normal_check_interval 5
retry_check_interval 1
check_period 24x7
notification_interval 0
notification_period 24x7
notification_options c,r
contact_groups systems
}

define service {
host_name johan
service_description HTTP
check_command check_regex_http!"404"
max_check_attempts 3
normal_check_interval 5
retry_check_interval 1
check_period 24x7
notification_interval 0
notification_period 24x7
notification_options c,r
contact_groups systems
}

I found several posts online that indicated to check that the SMTP and HTTP services are started on the server, only SMTP is started, did not see HTTP service. Someone suggested installing IIS on the server, but its not a web host server.

Any ideas as to what i can check?

Thanks,

What do you want to check? If you would like to check HTTP, you got to have that service on your server. It won’t check if that computer can access HTTP on other computers, it will check if HTTP port is accessible on that server. So installing IIS, is, I assume, a good advice. I’m not 100% sure for that, but it sounds ok.
For SMTP service, that is also a thing you got to have installed on your server.

Also check the NRPE and NSClient++:
nagios.org/download/addons/

Pls, in future be more specific, tell us your Nagios version and what error do you get (by that I mean the output you got from Nagios check).
