In other words, it sounds like you are making changes to the file, but nagios is not even looking at the file, since it wasn’t compiled to do so.
Ok, then I’ll recompile Nagios using template-based ext info. What I have to add or modify? I used default commands to do this when I installed Nagios

I have restarted Nagios but still without icons. I realize this bussines is quite desperating… If you have any different solution please post it!!

Check your file permissions on all files, read the docs again, look at your apache error logs, analyze that error log file because it most likely tell’s you exactly why there is no icon showing. You are not sharing something with us, but I can’t tell what.
Setup nagiosmap and give that a try. It lets you change icons by right cliking on a host.
