Yes - assuming we are talking about a *nix box, there are a couple of ways this can be done; either by using checks which run over SSH (which can have an expensive overhead), or more commonly through use of something like the NRPE addon. There is only limited “nagios” documentation on configuring NRPE - see nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/nrpe/NRPE.pdf
