Nagios and squelshing alerts

Dear Nagios forum,

I am wondering if someone can help me with an issue I have with Nagios. If our main monitoring line goes down all of our monitored hosts are perceived as being down and we are flooded with alerts. Is there a way to configure Nagios to either:

  1. Disable all notifications if more than X amount of hosts are "down"
    or
  2. Disable all notifications if a gateway address is not reachable.

Please let me know if this is possible and thanks for your help!!

A) Create the gateway host and have a ping check on it.
B) Use the parents directive

this way all downstream hosts should be marked as unreachable next time the gateway is unreachable.
