we have been having issues with a server where it pings but doesn’t accept any remote commands. We usually find this out when users try to connect to shared directories which can be a bit late. Our nagios only sends pings which come back fine so does anyone know if there is another command nagios can send out which tests these kinds of things?

Have a look at check_disk_smb, I think it would be useful here.
