Save or suspend VM at host shutdown

I am new to KVM having used VirtualBox in the past. Please can someone kindly explain:

  1. What the difference between save and suspend is?
  2. How do I get all my running VMs to either save or suspend (which ever is appropriate) when the host shuts down?

I am using ubuntu 12.04 as the host OS
